AMD is buying Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 billion in stock
The world-model startup's workloads move inside a chipmaker. AMD says they will shape its chip roadmap as it competes with Nvidia for AI compute.
AMD is buying a two-year-old model lab so its workloads can decide what the next AMD chips are good at.
AMD agreed on September 28 to acquire World Labs, the world-model startup co-founded by Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion in stock. Fortune reports the deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. Li becomes AMD's executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su.
Models of 3D space, used to train robots
World Labs trains models of 3D physical environments. Its Marble tool generates simulated worlds that TechCrunch says are used for entertainment and as training environments for robots. The company is about two years old and had raised roughly $1 billion, according to Fortune.
From partner to owner, for the roadmap
AMD and World Labs already had an inference-optimization and training partnership, and Li appeared at AMD's CES presentation earlier this year, TechCrunch notes. AMD's stated reason for buying, per the same report, is that understanding World Labs' frontier workloads will shape its chip-making roadmap. Su described it on X as combining World Labs' world-model work with AMD compute. Fortune places the deal in AMD's contest with Nvidia over physical AI: robots, self-driving cars, and other autonomous machines.
Why a build studio cares
When we pick compute for a client, the first question is whether the model they need runs well on that hardware at that price. A chipmaker that owns a model lab will answer that question for its own models first. For robotics and simulation clients, that could mean a stack where model and silicon come from one vendor, quicker to start on and harder to leave. For the rest of our work, what we will watch is whether AMD's tuning for World Labs reaches open models on its GPUs, or stays inside World Labs.
