Anthropic folds Cowork into Claude and adds Docs and Slides in beta
Pro and Max users get the merged app first, with editable documents and decks that export to PowerPoint and PDF, Design inside chat, and tasks that keep running after you close the window. Team and Free follow. Enterprise gets 30 days' notice.
Two apps become one. Docs and Slides land in beta. Enterprise admins get 30 days before anything changes.
Since Cowork launched, Anthropic has offered two front doors to the same model: chat, for conversation, and Cowork, for tasks that touch files, connectors, and skills. Which door to use was the user's problem. On September 16, Anthropic said it is closing one of them: Cowork and chat become one Claude, and the merged app gains Docs and Slides in beta.
The announcement on claude.com says Claude "can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation, with the context, skills, and connectors you already have." The rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop, and mobile over the next few weeks, with Team and Free plans following and Enterprise administrators getting at least 30 days' notice before their workspaces change, The Decoder's Matthias Bastian reports. There is nothing to turn on. Cowork users keep their existing chats, projects, connectors, and skills.
Docs, Slides, and the link that opens on a phone
Docs and Slides let a chat produce a document or a deck that the user can edit by hand or by asking, then export as PowerPoint or PDF, The Verge's Stevie Bonifield reports. A Claude Doc starts private and can be shared with collaborators who edit at the same time and leave comments, and Anthropic says anything made with Design, Slides, or Docs "lives at one shareable link you can open on your phone." Artifacts remain. Claude Design, until now a separate surface, is embedded in conversations.
Two behaviors from Cowork carry into the merged app, and for anyone who runs real work through it they matter more than the exports. Background work continues when the app is closed, per The Decoder. And users pick a confirmation preference: Claude asks before it acts, or checks in only when it needs to. Anthropic's stated reason for the merge is the one users gave it: choosing between two apps was confusing, and the context in one did not carry into the other.
What is not stated: any change to pricing, any change to the API, or a date for Team and Free. We run our client work on Claude, so those are the dates we watch.
Why a build studio cares
The setting we will change first on every client workspace is the confirmation preference, to ask before acting, because the merge moves connectors and file access into a surface where people are used to typing without consequence. The second thing we will test is whether a Docs export keeps the tables and links of an audit write-up intact, since that decides whether a client deliverable can leave the same thread that produced it, instead of taking the usual detour through a word processor.
