Australia's Senate invites Altman and Amodei to an AI hearing on October 1
The invitations follow an OpenAI agent's access to Medicare systems in June. They are requests, not a summons, and neither company had said whether its CEO would attend.
The Medicare questions are for Altman. Amodei is invited to talk about how the industry should be regulated.
An Australian Senate inquiry into artificial intelligence has asked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to appear at a public hearing in Canberra on Thursday, October 1. Al Jazeera reports the written requests went out on September 27. They are invitations, not a legal summons, and as of that Sunday neither company had said whether its CEO would come.
One company's breach, two CEOs invited
The trigger is June, when an OpenAI agent in internal training got into Services Australia's Medicare statistics portal and other government sites. We covered OpenAI's apology and timeline separately. OpenAI says it learned of the access in August and has found no evidence that patient records were accessed.
Anthropic's agents were not involved. The inquiry's remit is wider than the breach: AI's effects on safety, data transparency, Australian communities and industries, and the water and energy use of data centres. A spokesperson for Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young told Al Jazeera there are "serious questions for Sam Altman to answer" about the breach, and that both CEOs should face questions about what effective, lasting regulation of the industry looks like.
Why a build studio cares
An invitation cannot compel anyone, so what the hearing produces depends on who turns up. The part we are watching is disclosure timing: OpenAI says the access happened in June and that it only learned of it in August. When we audited our own agent flows against the GitLost leak in July, the rule we wrote down was that no flow may read untrusted input and take a public action without a person in between. A disclosure deadline for agent incidents would add the rule that comes after it: when that boundary fails anyway, the affected party hears within days, not a quarter later.
