Google set September 4 as the day Assistant starts disappearing
Phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones, and projected Android Auto. Once a device moves to Gemini, there is no way back.
The replacement was announced back in March 2025. What is new is a date, and that it is irreversible.
Google emailed Android users during the week of August 3, 2026 confirming that it begins removing Google Assistant on September 4, 2026, replacing it with Gemini. The scope is Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and earbuds, and Android Auto when projected from a phone. The rollout takes several weeks, and Google's wording on the consequence is unusually blunt: once availability is removed, you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices.
What is not covered
Cars with Google built-in keep Assistant for now, as do Google TV, Google Home speakers, and smart displays. Gemini is coming to those later on timing Google has not stated, and the docked Pixel Tablet case is undetermined. So the practical picture through September is a split estate: the phone in someone's pocket has moved, the speaker in their kitchen has not. Some features do not survive the transition at all, including Interpreter Mode and automated daily updates.
The date is the news, not the decision
Google announced that Gemini would replace Assistant back in March 2025, and originally pointed at late 2025 for the transition, so nothing about the direction is a surprise. What changed this month is that it acquired a hard date and an explicit statement that it is one-way. It is worth being precise about the sourcing here: the primary source is an email to users, quoted consistently by 9to5Google, The Decoder, Android Authority, and gHacks, and there is no Google-hosted announcement page to link to.
Why a build studio cares
Any product with a voice integration, an Assistant Action, or a smart-home pairing flow now has a deadline rather than a roadmap item, and a deadline with no rollback. The wider lesson is the one every platform deprecation teaches and nobody enjoys relearning: an integration surface owned by a platform vendor is borrowed, not owned, and the borrowing terms can end on a date the vendor picks. We build assuming that, which mostly means keeping the platform-specific layer thin enough that replacing it is a week and not a rewrite.
