Demis Hassabis stepped aside and Google folded the Gemini app into DeepMind
Confirmed: Hassabis moves to chairman and Alphabet chief scientist, Koray Kavukcuoglu runs day to day, Jeff Dean leaves to found a startup. The context: Gemini 3.5 Pro is months late.
Nobody holds the DeepMind CEO title now. Hassabis is chairman, Kavukcuoglu runs day to day, Jeff Dean is leaving.
Google confirmed in the first week of August that Demis Hassabis is no longer running Google DeepMind day to day. He becomes DeepMind's chairman and Alphabet's chief scientist, while Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's CTO and Alphabet's chief AI architect, takes over operations as a senior vice president reporting to Sundar Pichai. Nobody now holds a DeepMind CEO title. In the same shuffle, the Gemini app team moved into DeepMind and longtime chief scientist Jeff Dean announced he is leaving with several colleagues to found a startup.
What's confirmed and what's not
Confirmed, via Google's own announcement and on-record reporting from Fortune, TIME, and CNBC: the role changes above, the Gemini app team's move, Dean's departure, and Assistant teams moving to Platforms and Devices. Not confirmed: reports that Hassabis plans to leave Google entirely in the coming months. That claim traces to newsletter sourcing, Google has not said it, and Hassabis holds two new titles, which is not what a clean exit usually looks like. Treat it as an open question.
The delivery context
The reorg did not happen in a vacuum. Gemini 3.5 Pro, the next flagship, is months past its original June target, and the reporting around the shuffle ties the structure change to frontier delivery pressure. Folding the consumer Gemini app into the research org reads as one bet: shorten the distance between the lab and the product. Whether that fixes a late model or distracts the lab that builds it is the question the next two quarters answer.
Why a build studio cares
We build on foundation models, and provider org charts are leading indicators of provider roadmaps. A research lab absorbing a consumer product org usually means faster shipping and more productization of research; a founder moving to chairman usually means the next model's direction is someone else's call. None of that changes an API contract today. It does change how much weight we put on Google's model roadmap when a client build has to pick a provider and live with it for a year.
