A bowling alley's $120,000 scoring system got replaced with $200 of ESP32s

A Show HN post this week documents OpenLaneLink: an open source bowling scoring system built to replace a 2008-era proprietary system whose vendor replacement parts run $80,000 to $120,000. The replacement costs $200 to $400 per lane pair.

What the old system actually did

The 70-year-old pinsetting machines themselves still work fine. What breaks, and what the vendor charges six figures to fix, is the layer on top: ball speed and trajectory tracking, camera-based pin detection, foul detection, animations, and the interface between all of that and the physical pinsetter and ball return. The builder found that the advanced proprietary control box mostly just closes a single relay to trigger the old mechanical pinsetter.

What replaced it

ESP32 microcontrollers handle the sensing and control, linked over ESPNow mesh networking with an RS485 fallback for reliability, using relays, optocouplers, and IR-break-beam sensors for pin and ball detection. A Raspberry Pi running Redis acts as the lane computer, handling state machine logic for scoring and game flow. The whole build lands at $200 per lane pair, $400 for a fancier setup, against $4,000 per pair for vendor replacement parts alone.

This is vendor lock-in economics laid bare: a 6 figure system that, underneath, does something a $5 microcontroller and a Pi can do, once someone bothers to reverse engineer the actual requirements instead of buying the next contract renewal.
